Textbooks being reviewed
It's review time for English Grammar and Composition, English as a Second Language and Foreign Languages materials used in Tennessee public schools.
Here's the official press release. For some unknown reason the State Department of Education doesn't provide a list on their website of the textbooks currently under review for use by schools systems across the state. Thankfully, their Rachel Woods, once she got back into town, was prompt about providing me a copy of their Excel sheet with all the details. I'm posting the list in alphabetical order by book title below. If you'd like to see the entire Excel sheet it's here at Google docs.

As an English teacher, my suggestion would be that they do not buy English Grammar and Composition books for 9-12, or that they buy enough for each teacher to have a class set. The literature texts we assign to every student have "grammar and mechanics handbooks" in the back with all the rules. Finding exercises to do is easy enough via xerox or- as you show us- google docs or something similar.
I have never known an English teacher to assign the writing assignments straight from the composition parts of these texts; they are always too complex with some specifics we want to tweak or revamp big time. The content and exercises are easily disseminated in other ways and already are in most cases.
There are much better ways to spend this money.
Nashteach -- how do you elevate your concerns and suggestions in MNPS to get them not to buy the books or do what you recommend? Do the high school english teachers have a way to present this as "one voice" to the district and propose an alternative?

I'll communicate my opinion, but I do not mean to imply in any way that my opinion speaks for all English teachers.
If it's the way it used to be (I was on a literature text selection committee about 8 years ago), there are about 5-7 teachers for high school that will meet for 2 days to review, discuss, and choose. I doubt that these committees will be overtly told "and one of your options is no text at all." The mnps committee will name its preference, but then the state will decide if it can fund. In other words, the way it was, is that mnps adopts but the state purchases mnps's choices. In some cases MNPS has chosen a series, but the state then decided to put off purchasing.
It was an interesting experience. The great part was that you get showered with books and ancillary materials by all the companies. On the days the committee meets, the publishers make presentations and give stuff like book bags, pens, notebooks. More materials and trinkets. But then, at some point in the process, we had to pledge and sign, before a notary public, that we had not received any monetary bribes from the companies.
I should have read the press release more carefully. This is imporant to note:
State Board of Education members make the final decision for the official list. Local school systems can then adopt textbooks from the official state textbook list for a six-year period.
