He began his teaching career in San Diego County in 1971. In 1976, he became the youngest high school principal in Los Angeles County at the age of 31. In 1987, Dr. Garcia became Assistant Superintendent for Instruction in Santa Barbara, CA. He became Superintendent of the Carpinteria Unified School District in 1991. San Diego school officials were interviewing candidates for the job last week, according to their Web site. A decision is expected Dec. 18.
