Yes, that's my hat.
It's true. Nathan Moore correctly reports that I'm being nominated for the school board's District 5 vacancy. Further, I intend to run for the position.
This Metro Council appointment will last just 11 weeks until the August 4th election. Then the voters of District 5 will elect a board member who will serve for only a 2 year term instead of the normal four years to accommodate the regular election rotation for the board. Voters will have a rare opportunity to keep that board member on a very short leash and I don't mind that at all. Four years is a long time in the life of a child. This is a unique opportunity to serve the children, families and taxpayers of my neighborhood and I'm ready and willing to take on the challenge of this difficult district.
I'll have a lot more to say Tuesday evening and following. I'm working on putting in place some communication tools and information about our district for us to utilize in this effort and I am looking forward to working with my neighbors to make some real improvements in the educational life of our children.

Kay -- I am looking forward to learning why you want to get involved in MNPS when you have not enrolled your children in the district and are so critical of it. I am not saying these are not reasons to run, I just find it very interesting that you are running. I might have to come an listen today.
Why didn't you participate in the forum sponsored by Metro Council and attended by parents and voters? All the other candidates came and spoke about their ideas. Yet, you and the councilperson that nominated you declined to participate. AND in violation of the open meetings act, the councilmember in question has been lobbying for votes behind the scenes. Why exactly should ANYONE support someone who has had to resort to backroom dealings and is afraid to face the voters of the district you purport to "represent?"
I have never felt so sad for the students of District 5 as I did last evening. Kay could hardly say two words about what she plans to do as School Board member. Parents aren't bloggers, they are reaal people hurting for success in the schools she represents. This is just another tactic of divide and conquer. But it will not work. Stay at home Kay and educate your children. You do not have the faith to put them in Metro Schools. Let's find the candidate that really wants to work for the children of District 5.

I'll grant you that someone who educates their own children at home is unusual on a public school board but it's not unprecedented.
I'm no one's mouthpiece. Never have been and am not going to start now.
